Look around at Wisconsin license plates and you’ll likely notice a common theme. The standard-issue ones all start with the letter ‘A.’ Well, not anymore. After almost eight years and 4.7 million letter and number combinations, the Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles is out of combinations and will soon debut license plates starting with the letter ‘B.’ The ‘A’ plates went into circulation in 2017, when the state switched from six character plates to seven character ones. Adding that extra character gives the DMV almost 100 million combinations. The new plates will begin with BAA then move through the millions of letter and number combinations until all the ones starting with ‘B’ are exhausted. The DMV expects that process to take about seven years.
