On Tuesday, county leaders in Richland shared an update on a cyber security incident that occurred about a year ago. Last year’s breach allowed an unauthorized person to access personal information of thousands of county residents, including financial details, names, addresses, and some Social Security numbers. During a special county board meeting, officials provided some answers about what happened. Officials explained that the hack compromised county databases, meaning anyone who used county services or had personal information on file was at risk. While some questions remain unanswered due to the ongoing investigation, the county has taken steps to strengthen security and help prevent future incidents. At the end of the meeting, officials assured residents that it is safe to use county websites and submit personal information. For further questions, residents can contact the county directly. The county also has provided a FAQ regarding the cybersecurity breach.
