Memorial Park in Hazel Green, a place to honor those who served in the U.S. military, is getting a makeover. A modest stone monument at the small park, located at the intersection of South Percival and 19th streets in the heart of Hazel Green, was first dedicated in 1984 by the Hazel Green Lions Club. A Memorial Park Committee was formed in 2005 to improve and expand the park. Since then, several flagpoles, benches and other small stone monuments have been added — but this year’s project is the largest change yet. “Roll Call Stones” will be added, featuring the names of people who have served in the military and have ties to Hazel Green. They also will contain imagery of well-known historical military scenes. The stones will be arranged in the shape of a compass, a homage to the village’s nickname.
