A teenager from Platteville, accused of hitting and killing a seventh-grade student in Reedsburg while she was waiting for her school bus pleaded guilty in court Wednesday morning. 19 year old Kevin Green was charged with homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle in 13 tear old Evelyn Gurney’s death. A criminal complaint said Gurney was waiting for a school bus in May 2023 when Green was driving on Highway 33. He swerved toward a ditch, hit the back of the school bus, and then hit her while she was standing in her driveway. A judge withheld Green’s sentencing as long as he successfully completes four years of probation. That probation includes the following terms:
200 hours of community service with a minimum of 50 hours for each year of probation;
3 months in the Sauk County Jail with work privileges to begin on August 2nd, and;
8 community presentations to high school aged children about the dangers of distracted driving, with a minimum of two presentations per year. Several other conditions must be met.
Green is not to have contact with the Gurney family unless authorized by the Gurneys. Green’s driver’s license was also revoked for a year. The judge said the Gurney family agreed to the guilty plea and sentencing agreement.
