In a letter sent to the White House Monday, Wisconsin Congressman Derrick Van Orden is calling on Vice President Kamala Harris to invoke the 25th Amendment and take over the rest of President Joe Biden’s term. The 25th Amendment allows the vice president to immediately assume the powers and duties of the current president, if they and a majority of Cabinet members declare the president is not able to serve. Van Orden said Biden dropping out of the race is the latest sign he is not fit to continue serving. In the letter, Van Orden urges Harris to step in and remove Biden from office, writing it “is essential for the maintenance of national and global security.” Biden has not given any indication he would resign before the end of his term on Jan. 20, 2025. In his announcement he said he would “focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
