The city of Galena plans to construct public restrooms and a tourist information space in a vacant city-owned building. City Council members on Monday voted, 5-2, to utilize the 700-square-foot building at 403 S. Main St. for public restrooms and a space providing tourist information, contingent on a successful partnership with Galena Country Tourism. Council Members Jerry Westemeier and Katie Wienen voted against the proposal. According to Galena City Administrator Mark Moran, the city purchased the former Illinois Bank & Trust property for $200,000 in December 2022, and it has been vacant since that time. After the meeting, he said the city plans to construct restrooms in the space and work with Galena Country Tourism to stock pamphlets and other visitor information in the building.
