A bat from Rock County has tested positive for rabies, according to results from the Wisconsin State Lab of Hygiene. Although there are no reports of human contact, this case underscores the presence of rabies in local wildlife. In Wisconsin, bats are the most common carriers, but skunks, raccoons, foxes, and coyotes can also carry the disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, less than 1% of bats in the U.S. carry rabies. If bitten or scratched by wildlife, wash the wound and seek medical care immediately. For more information contact your county public health department.
