The Prairie du Chien Area School District needs to cut $1.4 million from its budget. This means student programs, faculty positions, and bus routes will have to go. The cuts come after the district operational referendum failed on April 1. The referendum would have given the district $7 million over the next four years. At last Monday’s School Board meeting, the district shared a list of potential cuts, which includes sports teams, clubs, music programs, and student council. The district has considered closing BA Kennedy Elementary to help balance the budget. This would leave the district with only two buildings. According to superintendent, the district will re-evaluate the need for student programs every year. Other cuts include free AP tests, which cost around $90, and 7.5 staff positions. Parents can comment on the cuts at the School Board meeting on May 12.
