The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) January Law of the Month is Safe Winter Driving and to spread more awareness on the topic. According to the DOT, from October 2023 to May 2024, over 11,000 crashes in Wisconsin were a result of winter weather being a factor. Nine of those crashes ended with a fatality.
If driving in a snowstorm, it’s important to give snowplows their space to clear the roads. Wisconsin state law says drivers must stay 200 feet back on a highway with a speed limit more than 35 miles per hour and 75 feet back on a road with a slower speed limit.
The DOT recommends using 511 Wisconsin which provides live updates on traffic and road conditions. Users can either download the 511 Wisconsin app or visit the 511 Wisconsin website.
