Wisconsin has been awarded a significant grant to help launch an innovative program designed to address the state’s ongoing battle with opioid, stimulant, and substance use disorders. The Wisconsin Department of Justice announced the $7 million grant Friday from the U.S. Department of Justice. It will be used to launch the Wisconsin Deflection Initiative. The funding will enable the DOJ to implement strategies aimed at providing treatment and support services to individuals struggling with substance use before they encounter crisis, overdose, or criminal justice involvement. The WDI will focus on preventing individuals from falling deeper into addiction by connecting them with care at an earlier stage, particularly before they experience life-threatening consequences or criminal charges. The initiative will seek to bring together law enforcement, emergency services, and healthcare providers to establish multiple pathways for individuals to access essential treatment services.
