The Wisconsin DNR is reminding folks how to prevent wildfires after a recent rash of them. In a Facebook post, the agency said there have been 70 wildfires across Wisconsin in the past 7 days alone, with 27 of them starting because of improper equipment. This means factors like unsecured trailer chains, mowing, recreational vehicles, tractors, etc. DNR officials said over 98% of all wildfires in Wisconsin are caused by people. It’s still dry and they’re seeing high and very high fire danger across the entire state.
To help prevent wildfires, you can do the following:
- Secure dragging parts and trailer chains to avoid creating sparks while driving.
- Avoid operating vehicles on dry grass.
- Check tire pressure for exposed rims.
- Maintain brakes and other high-wear components to prevent metal-on-metal contact.
- Operate equipment such as chainsaws, off-road vehicles, and lawnmowers early in the morning or late in the day to avoid sparks at peak burn hours.
