The Dubuque City Council is poised to move ahead on two long-awaited public outdoor spaces to add vitality to the community — an amphitheater on Chaplain Schmitt Island and a public square in the Millwork District. The amphitheater — a concert venue that could attract crowds as large as 8,500 when complete — will get a public hearing at the council’s Monday, Oct. 7, meeting. The facility is planned for the site of the old greyhound kennels east of the former dog track. In the Millwork District, “Foundry Square” is taking shape as the council will be asked to give its blessing to a request for proposals to hire a consultant to help design and construct a public square on the site of a parking lot at 10th and Elm streets.
