The Cardinal-Hickory Creek transmission line is now complete and operational. The transmission line runs from Dubuque County in Iowa to Dane County in Wisconsin, a stretch of 102 miles. Construction on the Cardinal-Hickory Creek Transmission Line project began in 2021. The line is co-owned by ITC Midwest, Dairyland Cooperative and American Transmission Company. The project drew significant attention because one mile of the line runs through the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge near Cassville. A legal battle with multiple conservation advocacy groups went on for years, but ultimately the line was allowed to be built through the refuge.
