An Iowa County elder was almost scammed out of $45,000 Friday. In a Facebook post made by Iowa County Sheriff Michael Peterson, he reports that an elderly person came into the sheriff’s office visibly upset. When speaking to the person, they reportedly told officials that they were speaking on the phone with someone who claimed to be from a law enforcement agency. Peterson said the elderly person said the caller was being very pushy and was asking them to withdraw money from the bank. When Iowa County officials tried speaking with the caller, they hung up. The sheriff’s office was able to convince the person that it was a scam and prevent them from withdrawing the over $45,000. The Iowa Co. Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone that scams are everywhere. Scammers will typically pressure a person into thinking something bad has occurred and ask them for money right away. According to the Wisconsin Bankers Association, scams commonly target the elderly population.
