More than 200 athletes will visit the Dubuque area next week for the 36th edition of the Special Olympics Iowa Winter Games. The two-day event will be held Monday and Tuesday, January 8th and 9th, at Grand Harbor Resort, Sundown Mountain Resort, Camp Albrecht Acres and ImOn Ice Arena. Organizers expect about 239 Special Olympics athletes and their unified partners to participate in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, speed skating, snowshoeing and cornhole. Opening ceremonies will be held at 6 p.m. Monday in the Grand River Center. The ceremony includes a parade of athletes and the lighting of a flame.
