Middleton-Cross Plains School District breaks ground on stadium improvements

MIDDLETON, Wis. — Construction is now underway on a multimillion-dollar facelift to the stadium at Middleton High School.

The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District broke ground on the project Monday morning. When completed, the improved Otto Breitenbach Stadium will have new locker rooms, ticket booths, public restrooms and a larger concession area.

The base project is expected to cost $8 million. A second phase made up of a second-floor multi-use community space could raise the total price to $12 million.

Much of the project’s funding will come from private fundraising. The Borden family donated a collective total of $6.7 million to the project, the district said in a news release Monday. The Middleton Education Foundation is helping raise more money to cover the project’s cost.

“We have been able over the last several years to make significant improvements and upgrades to our district buildings and facilities, resulting in a new elementary school and massive upgrades to our high school campus,” Superintendent Dana Monogue said. “We have not, however, been able to place a priority on athletics and activities facilities.”

The public-private partnership and significant donations have helped make the new facility a reality and will benefit the community in countless ways, she added.

Earlier this year, the district said it was facing a $1.5 million price tag just to bring bathrooms into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. That did not involve any additional upgrades.

Work is set to wrap up in the spring of 2023.
