HERE'S WHAT'S MAKING NEWS IN THE TRI-STATES...

FEMA pays Grant County a visit   dhw

Federal Emergency Management Agency officials
got a look this week at damage from last
weekend's flash flooding in Grant County.
They took a look at roads, bridges, and
public infrastructure on Wednesday...homes
and businesses on Thursday. Grant County
Emergency Government Director Steve Braun
says 150 homes have been damaged, mostly in
the southern and central part of the county.
"There were some properties in Lancaster, and
even as far north as Mount Hope, some homes
reported some pretty significant damage to
foundations. We had a lot of ground to cover
Thursday. We didn't necessarily get to all
the homes in Grant County that were damaged.
But what FEMA really wanted to do was get
an overall idea of what sort of damage we
had here. Kind of a snapshot."
Braun says of the 30 homes they showed FEMA,
eight were ruled as having major structural
damage. Meanwhile, damage to public
infrastructure in Grant County from the flooding,
is just under $1,000,000. Governor Jim Doyle
has yet to request a Federal Disaster Declaration
for Wisconsin.

OSHA says accident was "very preventable"  dhw

A preliminary investigation by Federal government
officials shows an accident at a grain bin
Wednesday morning in Mount Carroll, Illinois,
was "very preventable." Two people died and a
third was hospitalized after one person fell
into the bin, and four others went in to help
him. According to reports, Occupational Safety
and Health Administration investigators found
no safety program at the grain bin. In addition,
one of the employees who died because of the
accident was 14-years-old, and was working
illegally. OSHA says there were regulations
that should've been followed and it appears
they weren't. Workers drained thousands of
pounds of corn from the bin on Wednesday to
free the trapped workers.

Potosi man facing burglary charges   dhw

A Potosi man is facing charges of burglary, theft
and criminal damage to property, in connection
with numerous burglaries that happened in
Grant County, dating back to May of last year.
According to Grant County Sheriff Keith Govier,
20-year-old Andrew P. Chapman has been hit with
four-counts of burglary, two-counts of theft, and
four counts of criminal damage to property.
Three of the burglaries involved a cabin and two
homes on North Dutch Hollow Road in Waterloo
Township, while one took place at a cabin on
Scenic Road in Liberty Township. If convicted,
Chapman faces the maximum sentence of 50-years
in prison, $100,000 fine, or both.
Chapman is scheduled to make an initial appearance
in Grant County Court, on Monday (8/2).

Watch out for scammers       dhw

The flash floods of 2010 are sure to keep local
building contractors busy. But unfortunately
it also brings out the scammers. Marsha Gore
with the Aging and Disability Resource Center
of Grant County says there are simple rules to
follow if you need work done, because of storm
damage.
"You really want to check credentials, make sure
they are qualified to do the work that you
actually need to have done, and get everything
in writing. Also, don't give out any personal
information."
Gore says you should try to hire someone
who's done work for you before. If you have
any questions or concerns, you can call the
Grant County A-D-R-C...formerly known as the
Center on Aging...at 723-6113, or
1-800-514-0066.

Highway-133 project slowed by rain   dhw

Construction work on Highway-133 between Boscobel
and Mount Hope has been slowed...by what else...
the weather. Bill Schirm is with the Wisconsin
Department of Transportation.
"So the highway will be closed Saturday morning
July 31st between Woodman and Boscobel."
Again, Highway-133 between Woodman and Boscobel
will be closed Saturday, to replace a box culvert.
Concrete Structures of Janesville is the contractor
on the project, which is costing close to
$2.5-million. Work will continue on Highway-133
between Boscobel and Mount Hope, until mid-November.

Furnace Street project delayed to next week  dhw

It looks like construction work on Furnace Street in
Platteville won't start until next week. According to
Dan Dreessens with Delta-3, the project more than
likely will get underway on Monday. Furnace Street
will be rebuilt from Chestnut to Water Street.
Harry Viner Construction of La Crosse will be the
general contractor.

County Highway-O in Grant County is closed   dhw

Heavy rains in Southwest Wisconsin this past weekend
has led to County Highway-O being closed.
According to the Grant County Highway Department,
Highway-O is closed at the bridge between Tennyson
and Rockville Road, and will be closed at that location
until further notice.
