The unemployment rate went

down in southwest Wisconsin

between June and July…but

the decline was minimal.

According to the Wisconsin

Department of Workforce

Development, the jobless rate

in Grant County went from

6.2% in June to 6.1% last month.

A year ago, the jobless rate in the

county was 6.2%. By the way,

Grant County now has the

second-highest jobless rate in

the five-county region, only

lower than Crawford County.

Iowa County has the best

employment picture in the region,

with an unemployment rate of

5.3%. That’s down from 5.9% in


In Lafayette County the jobless

rate stayed the same between

June and July at 5.6%, while

in Richland County it dropped from

6.2% in June to 5.6% in July.

Unemployment in Crawford

County stood at 6.6% last month.

Statewide, unemployment

decreased or stayed the same in

68 of the state’s 72 counties.

The state jobless rate for July

was 6.8%, 7.7% for the nation.
