Local unemployment rates increased between
January and February in southwest Wisconsin,
making it the fourth straight month the jobless
rate has increased in the region.
In Grant County it held steady at 7.5%, but
in Iowa, Lafayette, Crawford and Richland
Counties it spiked upward.
Crawford County has the dubious distinction
of having the highest jobless rate in the area,
increasing to 10.4% from 10% in January.
In Iowa County it increased from 8.6% to
9.3%…Richland County from 7.1% to 7.8%…
and Lafayette County where it increased to 7.4%
Statewide, 61 of the 72 counties in Wisconsin
saw an increase in the unemployment rate
between January and Februry…while 11 had
either a decrease or no change. The Wisconsin
Department of Workforce Development says
jobless rates are typically at their highest levels
during the Winter months.
The state unemployment increased from 8%
in January to 8.2% in February. For the
U-S, it dropped from 8.5% to 8.1%.
