Unemployment rates went down in

southwest Wisconsin last month, but

still remain higher than or at the same level

as they were a year ago.

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce

Development says the jobless rate in

Grant County dropped from 7.5% in

February to 6.9% in March. A year ago

the unemployment rate in Grant County

was 6.5%.

The unemployment rate remains higher

than last year in Iowa County. In March,

it was 8.9%, while last March it was 8.2%.

But it was down from 9.2% in February.

Other local jobless rates in the region

include Lafayette County at 6.7%, down

from 7.5% in February…Richland County

at 7%, down from 7.8% in February…and

Crawford at 9.4%, which is down from

10.4% in February. But that’s higher than

the 9% unemployment rate in March 2012.

The information is based on monthly

claims for unemployment insurance,

plus a survey of almost 1,500 households.

Thirty-one cities in Wisconsin reported

lower jobless rates in March.

The statewide jobless rate for March

was 7.6%, down from 8.2% in February.

The national jobless rate was also 7.6%
