A man from rural Gays Mills has died

from injuries he sustained in a traffic

crash on Sunday afternoon in Crawford

County. Authorities say 86-year-old

Gene (Jake) Lomas died at a hospital in

Madison. He had been taken by med-flight

to Madison after initially being taken by

resque squa to the Gundersen Boscobel

Area Hospital and Clinics.

Lomas had reportedly stopped at a stop

sign at the intersection of County-W and

Highway-61 near Mount Zion. That’s when

he pulled out from the intersection onto

Highway-61, and into the path of a vehicle

being driven by 21-year-old Drew Furlano

of Woodstock, Illinois. The two vehicles

collided causing heavy damage to both.

Furlano is uninjured.


Helping at the scene were firefighters

from Gays Mills, the Ocooch Mountain

Rescue Sqaud, Boscobel Police and

Fry’s Towing.
