    Category: GeneralShalom Center offers Franciscan Pilgrimage in Italy

    Fr. Tom Hartl OFM will lead a Franciscan Pilgrimage to Italy beginning September 28 and running through October 9, 2014.

    The group will fly from Chicago to New York City and arrive at Flumicino Airport in Rome. From there they will leave for Assisi to visit Francis of Assisi and Clare of Assisi’s places of San Damiano, Basilica of St. Francis, the Portizuncola, the caves where Francis prayed in, La Verna, Basilica of St. Clare, Greccio and other places where Francis and Clare lived. As part of this religious expedition, the group will celebrate Mass daily at one of the sites. On day seven, the group will return to Rome to visit the Vatican, having a group private audience with the pope and tour Rome. On October 9, the group will depart for the USA.

    The city of East Dubuque is hosting this run/walk for the troops to help raise money for the University of Dubuque ROTC program, so the ROTC program can send 16 Army Cadets to White Sand New Mexico to participate in the 25th Annual Baatan Death March(which is a 26.2 mile march with 35lb ruck sack on your back)
    When: 01-MARCH-2014 (Saturday) registration begins at 8am with the race begining at 10am
    Where: East Dubuque grade school on HWY 35
    $15.00 fee per runner/walker
    $10.00 Tshirts on sale
    Bake sale and refreshments will also be available.

    Sister Marci Blum OSF will lead a seven-session series titled "Using Lectio Divina with the Lenten Gospels" from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m on Thursdays, March 6, 13, 20, 27, April 3, 10 and 17 at Shalom Spirituality Center in Dubuque.

    Lectio Divina is reflecting on the Word of God. There are four basic steps to it: reading, meditation, prayer and contemplation or action. Sharing will be on the upcoming Sunday Scriptures. Each participant should bring a Bible.

    Shalom Spirituality Center will host "An Irish Celebration – Irish Identity: Past, Present and Future" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11. The evening begins with a wonderful Irish dinner provided by Shalom's dietary department. Following the meal, Dave Cochran, who is involved in Irish programming at Loras College, will speak on heritage.     The University of Dubuque’s Office of Multicultural Student Engagement and the Black Student Union will sponsor a Charity Fashion Show on Saturday, March 8, at 7:00 p.m. The event will take place in Heritage Center’s Babka Black Box Theatre. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased at the Heritage Center Farber Box Office by calling 563.585.SHOW or online at dbq.edu/heritagecenter.
    The theme of this year’s show is Flavor of the Caribbean
    Proceeds from the event will go towards the UD student Service trip to Jamaica as well as Jamaica Jampact Inc., a non-profit organization that aims to influence and improve socio-economic conditions which affect Jamaica and the Jamaican Diaspora by (1) developing social welfare programs, with particular focus on educational initiatives targeting youth, (2) facilitating research, stimulating constructive dialogue, and raising public awareness on topical issues; and (3) providing opportunities and resources to grow and strengthen the network of young professionals, students, and friends of Jamaica. The organization does this – and more – through their Adopt-A-School Program, Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), and Think Tank Program.
    Local vendors participating in this year’s show include, DBQ Fashions, Zazous Bridal Boutique, Milroy’s Tuxedos, Maurices, The Children's Place, and the UD Bookstore.

    Shalom Spirituality Center is offering Sunday Evening Souposiums each Sunday during Lent from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., Sundays, March 9, 16, 23, 30, April 6 and 13 in the Shalom dining room. These evenings will begin with a simple soup and bread supper and will be followed by some food for thought and discussion. Shalom Spirituality Center is located at 1001 Davis Street, Dubuque, Iowa.

    Shalom Spirituality Center has been hosting a continuing series of "Reading That Matters" book discussions on books that can impact how we look at our world and the people in it since Fall 2009. The next discussion will be held from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18. Discussion will center around the book I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by authors Malala Yousafzai and Christina Lamb. The offering to attend is $6.
